Sureshot Signs and Symptoms of Breast Cancer

We are going to talk about some signs and symptoms today which are highly likely indicators of breast cancer, on observing any one of these signs, immediate specialist referral is recommended.

Lump in the breast
· Any new discrete lump
· A new lump in pre-existing nodularity
· Asymmetrical nodularity ersisting at review after menstruation
· Abscess
· Persistently refilling at review after menstruation
· Axillary or supraclavicular nodes

Breast pain
· Associated with a lump
· Intractable pain not responding to reassurance, simple measures such as wearing a well-fitting bra, or common drugs
·Persitent unilateral pain in postmenopausal women

Nipple discharge
·All women aged over 50 years
·Women aged below 50 years with:
- bilateral discharge sufficient to stain clothes
- bloodstained discharge
- persistent discharge from a single duct

Other Symptoms

·Changes in the size or shape of the breast
·Swelling of the arm (lymphedema)
·Dimpling of the skin of the breast
·Involution or inversion of the nipple
·Lump in the armpit
·Ulceration of the skin
