Breast Cancer Reoccurence Prediction Test - MammaPrint

February 7th, 2007 by Shikha

MammaPrint - A gene test designed to predict chances of reoccurence of breast cancer in women already once diagonized with it - today got formal approval from Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of USA.

Although this is not the first time that such a test has been designed, this is the first one to get the official nod from FDA.

Mammaprint measures the activity of about 70 genes found in tumor cells. Patients are categorized on a scale of low-risk to high-risk.

However some research points out flaws in the test too, in some studies the test was accurate only 25% of the time when predicting a relapse for high-risk patients. Doctors argue that the test can be a good indicative guide in it’s current form.

The company behind MammaPrint - Agendia - is a Ductch company involved in Genomic profiling and related research / products.

Mammaprint is one of the most accurate predictors of breast cancer recurrence and may be useful when patients want to avoid chemo.

A relative in Delhi had it done at Apollo and it has saved her from having chemo.
