Bras and Breast Cancer
June 26th, 2007 by ShikhaSydney Singer and Soma Grismaijer, authors of “Dressed to Kill”, suggest that wearing a bra for many hours a day may significantly increase a woman’s chance of developing breast cancer. They believe that wearing a bra, especially a tight-fitting bra with underwires, prevents normal lymphatic flow and hampers with circulation which could then result in fibrocystic changes which may increase the risk of developing breast cancer.
Among the findings listed in their book:
“Women wearing their bras whole day had a 3 out of 4 chance of developing breast cancer. Those wearing for more than 12 hours a day but not to bed had a 1 out of 7 risk.Women who wore their bras less than 12 hours a day had a 1 out of 152 risk.Women who wore bras rarely or never had a 1 out of 168 chance of getting breast cancer. The overall difference between women who wear bras 24 hours a day and those who do not wear bras at all was a 125-fold difference”.
Here are some of the guidelines for protecting your breast from developing a cancer.
BRA DO’s & DON’TS
1)Do not wear a bra while sleeping.
2)Do not wear underwire bras.
3)Wearing a clean, supportive bra is also a necessity.
4)Wear a bra for the shortest period of time possible - certainly for less than 12 hours daily.
5)Massage your breasts every time you remove your bra.
6)Don’t wear a black bra.
7)Do get your size checked every time you lose or gain weight, after a pregnancy, or if you are on hormone replacement therapy.
