WiFi and Cancer - Some thoughts
July 1st, 2007 by ShikhaBBC’s Panorama programme recently did a controversial episode on dangers of radiations emitted by WiFi routers.
The content matter said that the radio-emissions at public wifis were in some instances as much as 300 times higher than those approved by the regulator authority. There has been considerable debate on this subjects with some people raising concerns on the methods of measurement implemented by the BBC team and accused the program of scaremongering.
Now it is really upon us to decide which part of the debate one wants to be inclined towards, but what concers me is that with rapid rate at which we are losing this choice.
Initially, wifi was implemented in offices and homes by personal routers for use of individuals within the premises/organization. Those who feel insecure could simply cut back or stop using it altogether.
But with WiFi acceptance having grown immensely over the past couple of years many cities now have city wide wifi networks giving paid or free internet access. If you were a resident of such a city and believed that WiFi emissions can actually cause tumours, where would you go? For example, I recently visited Hong Kong and at any location in the city there were at least 3-4 WiFi connections available.
Having not been through any research papers on this topic matter, as a site we are not endorsing whether wifi can or cannot cause cancer (of the breast or any other kind), but I am very concerned that people are losing the choice to have an opinion here. Our governments are taking huge steps towards implementing a technology whose safety is under question. I wonder if there has been any consensus gathering of the residents in any of the cities where city wide networks has been implemented and whether your opinion would be taken when it comes to your city?
